정약용과 정조의 대화
The Dialogues Between Jeong, Yakyong and King Jeongjo

몸이 아프다는 건 내가 내 몸의 주인이 아닌 채 방치해 왔다는 것입니다.

Illness means you’ve abandoned ownership of your body by leaving it unguarded.



자신의 몸은 자신이 돌볼 수 있어야 됩니다.
‘정약용’이라는 드라마를 보니까 정조가 스스로 병을 처방해서 치료하시더군요.
정조가 의술에 대해 조예가 깊었다는 기록이 있습니다.
드라마에서 왕이 어의의 처방을 못마땅해 하니까
정약용이 ‘소인이 직접 처방해서 약을 지어 올릴까요?’하는 대사가 나오더군요.
You should be able to take care of your own body.
I saw in the drama TV series “Jeong Yakyong (a leading Korean philosopher)”
that King Jeongjo(22nd ruler of the Korean Joseon Dynasty) cured his own illness
through his own prescriptions.
Historical records show he was an expert in medicine.
In one of the scenes, the king is not satisfied with the doctor’s prescription
and Jeong Yakyong says,
“Would you mind me offering my own prescription, your highness?”



조선시대 선비들은 자신의 몸에 관한 처방은 스스로 내릴 수 있을 정도의
기본적인 지식은 갖추고 있었다고 합니다.
자신뿐만 아니라 가족이나 친척들의 병을
앉은 자리에서 처방해서 치료할 수 있을 정도의 능력은 구비해야
선비 자격이 주어졌다고 합니다.
In the Joseon dynasty in Korea, the Seonbi, or learned gentlemen,
possessed a basic knowledge of medicine to treat their own physical problems.
It is said that the approval of Seonbi occurs when one is capable enough
to instantly treat one’s family or relatives’ diseases as well as their own.



인간으로서 그런 것은 기본적으로 갖추어야 되는 일이 아닌가 합니다.
자신의 영을 싣고 가는 몸이 어떻게 구성되어 있는지는 알아야 됩니다.
자신의 몸을 타인에게 의뢰하지 말고 스스로 고칠 수 있도록
몸에 관한 기본적인 지식을 갖추십시오.
Basically as a human, everyone should possess knowledge of the body.
You should know about how the body, which is carrying your soul, is structured.
Learn the basics about the body in order to treat your diseases
by yourself without relying on others.
