A drop of ink in the sea




덕이 많다는 것 또한 마음이 열렸다는 것과 일맥상통하는 말입니다.
나와 다른 것을 받아들일 수 있는 여유입니다.
나와 다르다고 해서 수용하지 못하면 덕이 없는 상태입니다.
Having an open mind is the same as having lots of virtue.
It means having the deepness of mind to accept things different from you.
Not being able to accept things different from you is being without virtue.




덕이 부족하면 남은커녕 자기 자신도 제대로 못 담습니다.
자기 자신의 어떤 면만 담고, 나머지 부분들은 수용이 안 돼서 삐죽삐죽 삐져나옵니다.
If you are lacking in virtue, not only can’t you contain others,
but you can’t even contain yourself.
Moreover, you just contain parts of yourself and other parts come out
as they weren’t accepted.




스스로가 자신의 자질이라든지 가정환경, 처해 있는 상황을 인정하지 않는 것입니다.
좋은 면이나 자기가 인정하고 싶은 면만 받아들이고 나머지는 인정을 안 합니다.
내 탓이 아니고, 내 의사와는 상관없이 피동적으로 주어진 여건이라고 거부합니다.
It’s being unable to acknowledge your situation, family, environment,
or personal disposition by yourself.
You only accept what you want to acknowledge of the good parts
and forget about the rest.
You deny them because you think they are not your fault
and the circumstances given passively without your decision.




그런 부분을 누가 건드려주면 비명을 지릅니다.
그릇이 작아서 그렇습니다. 그릇이 크고 덕이 풍부하면 있는 그대로 받아들이고,
내 책임이라는 것을 인정할 수 있게 됩니다.
If someone points this out, you scream at them.
It’s because you have a small bowl.
If your bowl is big and your have abundant virtue,
you’ll go with the flow and be able to acknowledge your responsibility.




‘바닷물에 잉크 몇 방울’ 떨어져봐야 아무 영향이 없듯이,
그릇이 크면 아무런 움직임이 없는데
그릇이 작으면 누가 돌만 던져도 아우성치고 난리가 납니다.
Like a drop of ink in the sea, if your bowl is big, you’re not bothered at all.
If your bowl is small, if one even throws a rock you shout and let them have it.
